Hi guys I have a 5-6 senegal bichir and I'm thinking of buying a spotted gar can I keep them together in my grow out tank I have a 75g and thinking of buying a 300g the month of January. The senegal is alone on the 75g and if they can live together can you guys suggest what size of gar I'll buy because the gar might outgrow the senegal or the senegal might outgrow the gar and try to eat each other. Thank you guys I'm new to fish keeping :) Happy fish keeping everyone!

Ya sure u can keep them together if u later shift the gar . size your gar would have to be is 7 or more than 7 inch because at first your bichir can smell it as food and if it is small it will be a snack I think u don’t want your new pet to be a snack hope it helps

I have no experience with any of these fish, but from what I know, mixing these is likely a bad idea.
A full grown arowana could likely make a meal out of a Senegal bichir. The gar could live with it short term, but if it gets hungry, it can very easily take a big bite out of the bichir as well.
For it to work, the gar would need to be smaller than the bichir, as it likely won’t bother the gar.

Arowana just swims at top and bichir at bottom they won’t be clashing and if u don’t know my del hezi (armoured bichir) ate my alligator gar which was smaller than it

I have seen many cases where an Arowana terrorizes a bottom dwelling fish and I agree a Senegal will most likely not survive with any species of gar over time. If I was in this situation, I’d keep the bichir in the 75 and look for more robust fish to go with the gar like some SA/CA cichlids or larger Lower jaw bichirs and eels. Good luck!

I've personally had a Silver Arowana a Florida Gar and a few species of Bichir without issue until the Arowana jumped out of the aquarium. It depends on the personality of each fish imo.
