i have a spotted gar and a clown knife fish in a 55 gallon tank and was wondering what i can put in there with them that will get along . thanks in advance

that tank is too small for either one of those fish in the long run. i would get rid of them and get a nice pair of smaller central or south american cichlid. if you like knife fish then go for the smaller african brown knife and if you like gars then go for the hujeta gar (though its really technically not a gar) or some needlefish.

i think i have a new home for them lined up after they get to big but right now they are both only between 4 to 6 inches

a good tank mate would be 200 more gallons of water. Seriously you allready have a ticking time bomb on your hands why do you want to add to that? And a needle fish will not work in a 55. They grow to around a foot in the first year. And they are open water predators. I have a 12''er that looks cramped in a 125.

that gar will out grow that tank in no time.
my first gar grew close to 3 to 4 inches 2 months in a row!!!
then slowed..... still growing 1" a month. in less than a year he has nearly reached 16". now imagine if i hadnt raised him in a 12" wide tank for the first 6 months untill he reached 14" how big he would have gotten.
now my gars growth does appear a little on the large side
