I'm looking to buy some spotted gar for my big native tank. I went into Big Al's in Brampton Ontario and they had 4 different species of gar in the same tank.

The fish room manager said they were spotted gar, striped gar?, silver gar? and that they were all types of needle nose gar imported directly from South America.

I told him I wanted North American Spotted Gar and he didn't think they existed. The 6 inch spotted ones looked like young spotted gar but then they wouldn't be from South America.

Has anyone seen the gar at this Big Al's? I'm thinking about taking pics of them so someone on here can give me a positive I.D.

this guy sounds like an idiot!!! get some pictures and we will id them for you.

they sound like they are some of the tetra/characin that have been floating around labeled as "gar"

yea i agree with Jordan they sound like tetra/characin since there are no true gar species that live in South America..

Hey Blaker.

I work at the BAs in Oakville. Brampton must have a bunch of Ctenolucid (hope I spelled that right) "pike-characins" from South America. We've actually got Florida spotted gar in now...Sometimes we get longnose, alligator and Cuban gar too.

When was last time you had Cuban?

When are you gonna have again?

It was last year...they go through these seasonal availability periods. There were some juv Cubans at the Ontario Reptile and Aquarium show for 125 bucks.
