spotted gar price check....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
that price seems pretty high for a gar that size...i would expect that for an alligator gar perhaps, but not a spotted gar. also, how are you certain it's not a Florida gar? did they say it was wild caught locally? gars that size right now moving through the commercial pet trade are just about ALL Florida gars...not that it isn't possible, it is just very unlikely to be a spotted--

ps-- a decent price would be $25

i am pretty sure its a spotted because I know what the two look like.. another LFS i went to today had two about 10" floridas for $75 but they also had a 5" "blue" aro (haha black) and they wanted $400 for it:ROFL:     they also had a 10" silver for $125 and a bunch of other crazy prices.... they try to make themselves rich off of the mis-informed people of course they always misinform people .... oh and guess what lfs it was....

if it's a petsplus i highly doubt its a spotted gar. they would be getting their gars from major distributors/suppliers, all of which would be supplying Florida gars at this time. the two species look extremely similar, so aesthetically you wouldn't have a problem if you got a Florida thinking it was a spotted...and although a Florida can grow larger, they both grow at similar rates and in captivity won't reach their wild maximums in the majority of cases.
i would just suggest not buying the fish at a high price specifically if you think it's a spotted. there are a lot of suppliers out there who should be able to provide Florida gars at cheaper prices--

Please tell me the differences in 8 inch fish....I really want to know.
If you tell me the distance from the front of the eye to the back of the gill cover is less than 2/3 the length of the snout in the Florida gar, while it is more than 2/3 of the length in the spotted gar I'm going to throw my popcorn in your general direction.

I personally would never pay that much for a suspected spotted gar at an LFS.
I'd rather Just ask a Ditch diving Native freak to find me one (Or catch it myself). At least then the species is guarenteed and can be checked to locality.

I got my 13" Florida gar for $38

Mine was free :) Still kinda not knowing which of the two it is :) THough it was free and over a foot :) I believe 16" now :)

Sorry couldn't help ya much.. that is aroudnt he going price at the only Lfs here that carries htem is ranging from 20-40.00
