My spotted gar is around 8" now and thickening up nicely... unfortunately he has just killed my 9" Sturio Catfish!!! I know they are fish-eaters but I thought they were fine in a community of similar to larger sized fish so I'm a bit shocked really that this has happened! I really loved my sturio cat and they are so rare in the trade that its terrible for this to have happened to him!

The damage was awefull to say the least!!! :( will my other fish be safe or is this just unlucky and possibly brought on by the silver shiny eyes and nose of the sturio luring the gar to bite him mistakedly

All of my other fish are bigger than the gar and he hasnt shown any aggression to anyone atall untill this incident so this is really wierd that this happened! Is this normal behaviour for a spotted gar to just an unfortunate event?

Whoa! Are you sure it was the gar that attacked it? It's possible for the gar to do that kind of damage, but I wouldn't think it would. My spotted gar (6.5") is completely ignoring anything else in his tank, other than feeders. There's a 1.5" apistogramma that he still hasn't even looked at, let alone attacked.

Yes, unfortunately im 100% sure... yesterday he attacked the first time while I was looking at the tank... he popped the left eye on the sturio catfish and i thought it was just an unlucky conicedence brought on by the silver shiny eyes of the sturio... then hes been coming down to the bottom since then and stalking the sturio cat.... today while I was on the phone the final bit of damage happened!:cry:

Dang. I wouldn't have thought the gar would attack something the same size. I don't have any advice to give, sorry.

Hopefully he doesn't go after anything else in the tank. What else is in with it?

sorry to hear that...my gar loves to eat bullheads(small ones) it is 12" now...it doesnt mess with the 6-7" tsns or the 5-6" yellow bullhead but if it is hunting it looks at them real hard...it could have been hungry and the cat is thin...it could have thought it could eat it then after the damage was done it realized it couldn't eat it....my 12" gar eats 3-4" comets(goldfish) and trys o eat 3-4" sunfish...again sorry to hear that it killed your cat but from my exp. they love small cats as a food sorce...not that your cat was "small" but the thinness of it could have my the gar feel it could eat it...it problibly wont go after your other fish unless this gar was and is an a-hole fish witch can happen...gl

I have a gar that is a little bigger than my armatus my Brevis atf and a tat and he flipped out last night and almost killed them all........... My ATF might not make it........I took him out of the tank and am medicating them but I'm close to KILLING him with my bare hands........
