i hust got my spotted gar and i wonder what size my aquarium shuld be becus now i only got a 40 gallon tank but im gona get a bigger next week and i whant to know how big i shuld get?

They are relatively slow growing for monster fish in my experience but correct decision to upgrade the tank ;)
Its one of the smaller species of true gar so probably wont get much over 24", if in an aquarium. I would reccomend a width (front to back of the tank) of at least 30" in the long run. Id say a 72"x30"x24" (LxWxH) would be considered a minimum to keep an adult spotted gar in comfort.
If you have room and can afford a 72"x36"-48"x24" would be ideal. Length isnt that important to them, more width because they are not great at turning arround, unlike something like a silver arowana.
However i personally like to see large fish swim the length of the tank so if it were me id get a 96"x36"x30" but the extra length and height (which isnt that important to them either, but 24" is minimum for a fully grown gar really) is just down to personal preference.

thanks for the tip mate

No problem, have you decided on a tank yet?
Dont let what ive put scare you, you could keep a small spotted gar in much less than 72x36x24 while its growing but i was talking for a fully grown adult for life.
You basically just need to make sure it has enough room to turn easily by providing atleast 1.5 times the body length in width, and obviously a reasonable amount of length so its happy, dont get a tank thats 2ft long but 1.5 times wider than the gar:D:D
Basically just use common sense and you cant go far wrong.

what's the size on your gar? it would be best if you could "step up" tanksize as the fish grows. a 6" gar in a 250g is not optimal.

Why not?

A 6" gar would be fine in a 40g till about 10", then it would be large enough to go into a 250g. I don't see he needs to change anything.
