Hi there,
As I stated in my introduction, my Gars are currently in their winter tank, where they will stay until the pond is warm enough again.
They were housed in this tank at the beginning, when I got them earlier this year as tiny babies.
They spent the summer in my Pond, along with some other fish. Obviously, they are much bigger now (about 20cm, or 8 inches).
Now I want to get them a bigger tank for the winter, I´ll soon get them a 2m (7 foot) this should be big enough for some time.
But I thought, why only use it in winter, when I can keep other fish in there all year round and just add the gars during the colder months?
Now my question:
Which fish could I add?
I´ve read quite a bit on Gar tankmates, but I´m still not really sure on which species would be suitable.
Sorry for starting one of those "Gar Tankmates" threads again.
First of all, I like spiny eels very much, one of my favorite would be a fire eel, but i don´t think the tank would be big enough for an adult one.
I also love Polypterids, I heard that they are great tankmates for gars. But which species would fit in the 2m tank? P. senegalus? P. delhezi? or would bigger Bichirs be fine as well, because apparently, they are not the most active fish.
Also what about reedfish? I´ve read they would get eaten by the gars, does anyone have any experiences on that combo?
An old favorite of mine would be freshwater pipefish, but I guess no pipefish species would do well with gars, because of their long and narrow bodyshape.
I also don´t think any kind of arowana would be an option in such a small tank?
Same with lungfish, I think.
A Hydrolycus sp. would also be intresting, but given ther fast flowing natural habitat and nervous swimming style, I think they won´t fit the gars. Also, I guess the tank would be a bit too small for them.
All in all, I would like to ask, if someone could tell me some relatively big and/or interesting species that I would be able to house in a 2m (7 foot) tank alongside my gars.
If someone knows any other suitable fish species, I would also be happy to know about them.
Also, it would be nice to hearr some personal experiences (bad or good ones)
SHORT VERSION:
two 8 inch "spotted" gars, 7 foot tank, not a really strong current
Which species would be suitable?
Other suggentions are very welcome as well.
Thank you in advance!
regards
Manuel
