Hey everyone! I have been planning my 250 gallon tank stock for a while now, and had decided to buy a FL gar for it! However, my LFS only has spotted gars..... (and they're priced nicely too!) Can anyone tell me the difference in keeping the 2? Also if anyone knows there max grow out size that would also be appreciated info! Thanks!

yes, care is generally the same...and your LFS most likely has FL gars, actual spotted gars are not really available in the hobby (they look very similar, and 99% of LFS can't tell the difference...i'm not aware of any that fit into that last 1%, but i figured it's statistically possible :)) --

Cool. So it doesnt really matter what species it is?

between those two in terms of care, no. and just assume you're looking at Florida gars--

If its labeled as a south american spotted gar and it looks like this, its not a gar and it won't exceed 8 inches. I don't even think its south american, florida maybe? Just an fyi.

Yes there is always the risk of a newcomer looking for a gar to fall into the pike characin trap.

Assuming it is a true gar (and i will give the OP the benefit of the doubt that they know it is as they are setting up a 250 gallon tank for big fish) it is likely a florida gar, as Solomon says.

Im pretty sure its a true gar

looks like a little version of this I think.

Hey what is a good diet for a young FL gar? I cannot get mine to eat anything but feeders. He is very small like 5 or 6 inches small. I tried brine shrimp, bloodworms, and feeders, and he only ate the feeders. Any help?

stick with the feeders until he's 8"-10" then try frozen silversides/cut tilapia/raw shrimp. feeders are the simplest and more or less most convenient bet early on as you can just provide a constant supply and they will pick them off as they prefer. once the fish is larger you can experiment with non-live; this is how i've proceeded with most of my gars--
