Not that I'm going to gt one any time soon but I was in a store today and they had a tank full of four to six inchers and that was the going price.I found it interesting that a store here actually used a different name other than alligator gar for a change.

that's the price for Florida gar and most likely to be Florida gar! I never seen a spotted for sale but I think the price would be more than $200 for that size!

Ask the store where they got them.

Odds are that these gars are just farmed Florida gars that were mislabeled as spotted gars, but there is a chance that they are true spotted gars if they were collected in the state (which is illegal, by the way). Stores in PA have been busted for having illegally acquired true spotted gars before, so keep that in mind when considering getting one if they were collected in-state.

It's always better to be safe and find out where they got them first rather than buying one to only find out that it was illegally collected.

Fl spotted gars are only more common in the lfs industry. In the wild true spotteds outnumber fl.gars drasticly since their range is 10x that of floridas. Chances are they are fl gars. From my experiences true spotteds shouldn't be much more than fl.gars, just a little harder to find and even harder to find acurrately labeled. I have a friend with 2 true spotted gars and from looking you cannot tell the difference between the fl.gars he has in the same tank. Sounds like a normal price for a fl gar.

i get mine for 24-29 normally 6-8 inches, fl, spot, or gator, all special request orders and my guy gives them to me for the same price depending of the season

to the OP - as stated in other posts, they are likely FLGs not SPGs. if that is the case then $39 is a little on the high side (that size is usually $20-30 out here in MI).

Nope, anything over $100 is excessive at that size if they're true spotted gars.

as i stated in the recent "tropical gars now available" thread, the fish is worth what people are willing to pay for them really. so that can control the market. that and i don't think you should be saying what is excessive or not when it comes to spotted gars and prices--
