spotted or florida?

if you caught in the wild out there, then it would be a spotted gar, but if it's the fish in your avatar, it is 99% likely a Florida gar from what i can see there. if you bought it from an LFS it is most likely a FL gar...pics would be needed to give a better guess--

the one in my avitar is pretty sure a florida.
but my other one is just a little dif. seems like more spots and they are more round then the stretched look of a florida. also he is more of a yellowish.

even cell phone pics would probably work. there are some nuances to the spotting between the two species, but this is highly variable. judging from what you have described, i would say it's a Florida gar...again, pattern can be extremely variable; and if you bought it from a fish store, it's almost definitely a Florida gar--

If the distance from the eyes to gills is more than 2/3 the length of the snout then it is a spotted, if its less it is a Florida.
