I've owned 5 spotted raphs for about two years. Two were tiny babies, around the 2" mark. But now all 5 are in the 4" range. Thought these were slower growers, not that I'm complaining. Anybody else find these to be faster growers?

Ill be the first to admit ive never kept one but an inch a year isnt very fast growth for a fish...

They are in general a smaller catfish. They won't grow fast because they are close to max. They may grow some more but will take much more time. If you want a fast growing talking cat, get an Irwini. They grow much fast and grow up to 24'' eventually. The smallest one that you will find is usually about 4'' at most stores.

Not yet on the uranoscopus, sadly. Still only have a 75g tank at the moment. Had bigger, but had to move.

Striped raphs grow about an inch per year and they max out usually around the 8" to 10" mark. With spotteds having such a smaller top size, it just seems odd that they'd reach their adult size so rapidly. Perhaps they do not live as long.

Have a spotted and striped raphaels catfish, also an irwini. All 3 I think grow fast, according to my specimens. The irwini in 1month have grew by about 2inches. The striped one is now 6inches, from 1 that was about 1 and a half incher 5mths back. The spotted one is now 4-5inches from about the same size as the striped within the same period of growth. I have another striped 1 in my community tank which is an extreme slow grower, bought 7mths back at the same size and now its less than 3inches. So my guess is either specimen characteristics or the place they are kept in. The small striped is in a densely planted tank while the large 1 is kept in a tank with more free roaming spaces

ive had my spotted raphael about 2 years got him at about 2" long and now he is about 4"-5" i thought that was pretty slow growing, but all i have to compare growth rate to is my Oscars and he definetly grows WAY slower than they do!!!
