Hey guys, so after my failed attempt with exodons I'm moving on to new school ideas. I know silver dollars get too large for my planted 55, but it appears spotted silver barbs are smaller growing to only 5-6". Is this true? Could I keep 5 or 6 in the tank? Will they also devour my plants? Filters are a Rena xp3 and an AQ 110. Thanks!

Silver dollars are a love/hate type thing. I have seven red hooks in my 210g and they are awesome to watch schooling around but when they freak out because they got startled by something you just want to get rid of them. The spotted type do stay a bit smaller but in my opinion a school of five or six will be a nightmare in a 55 gallon tank. Really with the type of movement these fish do I would say a 6 ft tank would be better. I would choose something different for your 55.

I second what dmd said. I had 5 spotted silver dollars in a 55 and they were only about 2-3 inches and the tank was too small for them. The move too much and too fast. Always banging into stuff.

Any recommendations?
Wish I had a good answer.... Ive been getting tired of how dumb my silver dollars are and am looking for something smaller myself. I dont really have any predatory issues that I know of with my primary fish being a big pearsei so I am leaning toward Australian rainbows, or maybe roseline sharks. Sounds like you need to find some barbs like you used to have.

Rainbows are nice fish, don't really school tightly though. I was considering the dwarf rainbows at one point. Roseline barbs are nice too. I'll have to see what they have Sunday.
