They're not a great first turtle as their setup is a bit more involved than really "easy" turtles like the common musk and mud turtles, and even the more common basking types like painteds and sliders. They like real land rather than a simple basking platform...that's the main issue IMO.

I agree. They might be small in size but there are many other similar sized turtles that are much easier to care for. Plus spotted turtles aren't exactly cheap.
