I've been staring at one adult Spotted gar and multiple adult Florida gar for quite some time trying to figure out what it is that makes them look so different from each other to me-even though it seems most agree that it is really hard to tell the difference just by glancing at them. Something that seemingly took me far to long to notice is that every Florida gar I have has no pattern or markings at all on their belly. The Spotted gar I have has spotting/pattern that wraps all the way around its body (covering its entire underside). The few pics of Spotted gar I have found all seem to have belly markings.
Does anyone have a Florida gar with a belly pattern or a Spotted gar without? Maybe this is old news? If not maybe it would be a helpful way to differentiate the two species.
