Spray Bars.. Are they necessary

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My understanding of the purpose of a spray bar is to provide surface agitation of the tank water to improve water oxygenation and off gassing. Canister filters are sealed systems which provide no air/water interface meaning no oxygenation or off gassing making a spray bar pretty essential.

If you have another air/water interface like a wet/dry sump also running on your tank then spray bars are superfluous... but they do a nice job of directing surface debris towards an overflow.

on some filters, like the Rena XPs they come with a nozzle attachment that you use in place of a spraybar that works much better.

it provides much better current and surface agitation than the spraybar.

BUT

if you have a quiet tank with floating plants etc and you don't want things blowing all over the place, then a spraybar is better.

so they have their place, but they are not necessary.

+1 but you can put diffusers on the outlet to oxygenate the water aswell so either is fine, aslong as the surface of the water is being aggitated it should be fine without a difuser or a spraybar

Are they really necessary to have in a canister set up ? Pros and cons of having one ...

Spray bars circulate the water efficiently........I made a 6 foot spray out of PVC for my 125.........The area of water that it outputs on, as compared to a venturi, is wider(which is better).............
