Just set up a new 72 gallon bow front tank that I bought as a package deal. It came with a Cascade 1000 cannister filter that can be used with a spraybar or a spout. What is the preferred setup? I presently have the spraybar positioned just below the water surface and the setup is quiet and is moving a lot of water through the tank. There is not much surface agitation though but the water is moving on the surface. Is surface agitation important for putting oxygen into the water or is there enough just coming through the filter?

I prefer the spraybar because of just what you stated...surface flow does promote oxygen circulation, and collection.

Agreed

Howdy,

If you have a planted tank, position the spray bar under water, or you will drive any CO2 out. If you don't have plants, positioning the spray bar above the water will allow maximal aeration  Due to its width, a spray bar generally allows better whole-tank circulation than a single spout.
