Well this has been on my mind for many months....

How can you distinguish visually LPS ( Large Polyp Stony) corals and SPS (Small Polyp Stony) corals?

Its really not that difficult to tell. SPS are kinda hard looking and most of them are sticks. LPS are just soft looking overall when they're out. Go on reef central and look at the pics and i'm sure you'll pick it up really fast

is it a stick or something squishy? :)

They summed it up pretty well... but a better distinction would be do they have a large mass that retracts into a small one when disturbed (like when you poke zoas or anemones they ball up). SPS technically do this as well... just they are so much smaller its not noticable. For example that frog spawn there, if you shook it, it would shrink to well under half its current size.

Ok thanks a million....that honestly cleared it up completely... lol thanks for the site shau...thanks for the pics flake lol

Btw kev I think the pic of the lps is a hammer coral....thats one thing I know....because I'm very interested in having one lol

LOL hammer, frog spawn basically the same thing :P but your right, I didn't really look at it haha.

....kev this means a lot to me that I corrected you....I feel amazing...I feel like I should go out and fly.....or buy a really huge fish tank and call it home

LOL no one ever said I was perfect haha. But to be fair in my generally my expertiese lies in the more fringe info areas then the main stream areas, I don't spend much time on common stuff because any one can, I like to be able to identify the really weird stuff :D and I'm also trying to design the perfect "natural" system (filtration/feeding wise) so live stock is sorta a side line in most of my reading, even though what livestock I choose is dependant on the feeding aspect of the system LOL (though not as important as you would think...). For example I found out that if I use glass for the front pannel of my tank, it is litterally going to weigh 1.5 tons (just the glass)... so I'm trying to rethink that particuallar aspect... either how to reduce weight... maybe by using multiple small pannels, or switching to acrylic... or just think of a way to install a 1.5 ton pannel of glass... LOL

You should tell us more about this "natural" system...sounds interesting lol

Btw probably your best bet would end up being acrylic....lol dont think thier is anything else out thier....unless you want to settle for like an inground/above ground pool to be installed which I've seen some people used

Yeah... I know... Acrylic is so expencive though I was trying to keep costs down... but it is what it is.
