I came across a piece of 1/4in glass that is 81x34.5. I have never built an aquarium before but really want to. I have always loved the look of the square tanks and was thinking of doing a tank that would be 34.5x34.5 and 11.5 tall. That would use almost all the glass but i'm not sure if i would need a brace or not. It would be the equivalent of a 60g. Also how hard is this to do. And what all would i need. Thanks.

"Also how hard is this to do."

Well that depends entirely on how proficient you are at cutting glass and rejoining it with silicone.

Unless you are practicing for a more substantial enterprise I'd suggest its more work than its worth.

And a problem with square tanks is the bracing has to go on all 4 sides.

minus the cutting of the glass it would be fairly easy IMO... if you look at any professional built tank there is the har plastic bracing at the top and bottom. since the tank will only be 11.5 inches tall you really wouldnt need much extra support but i would suggest a small border at the top and the bottm of the tank. you could easily build one out of some sort of cabinent bordering or something to make it decorative

you also could go with a plywood bottom and back then save some of your glass to get a little more length and height to your tank.. but i wouldnt go much more than 16 inches tall with only 1/4 thick glass

I was thinking about this also. I do have some plywood and the tools to do it. What would need to be done to join the wood with the glass. Would all i need to do is silicone it down and seal the bottom or mill out tracks for the glas to go into.

don't get your hopes up with this glass you found. my bet is that its tempered, and you can't cut tempered, if you try, it shatters. usually there's a tiny sticker somewhere to label it as tempered. if not though you can still assume it is because the only uses for a piece like this are a shower door, sliding glass door, etc., and law requires those to be tempered.
sorry to be the barer of bad news :(
