I recently ran out of tilapia and decided to use some frozen squid I had laying around for fishing purposes. The squid was still fresh and never had been unfrozen. It was an arrowhead squid, the one that is larger and sold singly. I filleted it, removed guts and it produced some nice thick fillets. My fish seemed to go more nuts than their normal tilapia. Once the guts were removed it was pretty clean with little residue, I think I'm losing nutrition by removing organs and may leave in next time. What do you guys prefer and why?

I used to feed my armatus a rotation of squid, shrimp, tilapia and any other cheap fish that wasnt messy.I also suspect that nutrition is lost with the removal of the organs.I have tried soaking the meat in a liquid vitamin supplement in the past.

I just checked the nutrition and looks like the tilapia is higher protein but you are getting some different vitamins with the squid. It's actually a very high cholesterol food....

As I would imagine is true of obligate carnivores on land piscavores need the entire section of prey item for it to be "complete". I feed my ferrets a raw meat diet, and I get ground rabbit, chicken, turkey etc that includes bones, organs and fur/feathers. I would have to imagine if you aren't supplementing the fish's diet with either a pellet or as krich said a vitamin soak then the organs will be necessary to round out the nutrients and vitamins that aren't present in the flesh of the fish alone.

My guys are on a pellet as a staple but get tilapia/squid maybe once a week or so, more of a treat. I supplement with live compost worms once a week as a treat also. This particular pond is mainly stocked with catfish and I add fresh fruits(whatever leftovers I have) which they devour without hesitation.

The squid wouldn't be a viable replacement. ..just an enhancement to what seams a very balanced diet. I use vitamin suppliments but only on occasion as their diet is well rounded.
I have heard about the cholesterol thing with the squid but like xraycer said, it's the good kind....

....now you got me thinking calimari....

Most of the fatty acids consumed by fish get utilized as a source of energy, just remember that just like humans, the fat that doesn't get used gets stored. According to some of the leading aquaculture researchers in the USA, fatty deposition in and around the liver is one of the leading causes of premature death in aquarium fish.
