So my roommate has a little flower bed outside our condo, not very big maybe 6' x 4'. It has a little fence around it but it does nothing to keep out the rabbits, squirrels and chipmunks. We are trying to find a way to keep them all away because they eat all the leaves off the plants and all the flowers, so it just looks stupid.

She had heard about using human hair, spreading it around, which was convenient because she is a stylist. Didn't work, does not even make them think twice.

Last night she called me and said she heard that if you use cat liter...like liter that the cat has peed on. Also convenient because I have a cat haha

I have not tried this yet, my plan is to spread some around tonight...has anyone ever heard of this and know if it works? If it does not work does anyone have any suggestions on things we could try next?

Also, I have heard that if you use fish tank water to water the plants on occasion it really works good. Is this true? Obviously it would be freshwater tank water. Is the water full of nutrients or BB or something that would help fertilize the plants?

Thanks!

I never heard of the cat litter one but I have heard that you can also sprinkle Cayenne Pepper around plants. It's suppose to keep the little bastards away. That or get yourself a nice pellet gun! :D

Aquarium water makes an awesome fertilizer! Definitely use it, you'll see a difference.

pellet gun...that could be the answer right there! Start having some roasted rabbit :grinno:

I have never had squirrel or chipmunk, I am assuming probably not worth it because they are so small...

Would that even be legal to shoot them and kill them?? I have no idea...

Cayenne Pepper is easy enough to try, although I think it would wash away every time it rained. Would I sprinkle it on the plants them selves or just around it?

You can eat squirrel, it's actually quite good! As for how to apply the pepper, I think you just sprinkle it around the base of the plant. I've also heard of people mixing it with water and spraying it on the leaves of plants to keep insects off. That might work for rabbits too.

Anyone have any idea if it would be okay to shoot these little buggers? I would need to buy a pellet gun, but thats easy enough...but would I get in trouble for shooting them, since technically its not really my own property, its a patio on the front of a building with multiple condos, I dont need the F&G showing up or something because I am shooting rabbits and squirrels with a pellet/bb gun...

Well rabbits and squirrels are technically "game animals" and here in my state to legally harvest them you need a hunting license. I'm not sure how it works where you live but it's probably similar. There are also rules about how far away you have to be from homes to "hunt" certain game animals and I think shooting out your window is a big no-no in the rule book.

Yeah thats what I was thinking...probably stick to trying the cayenne and try the cat litter...

Anyone else got any entertaining ideas?
