Good news is my sick synodontis started eating again. I think I'm going to stop the meds soon and monitor if he keeps getting better, it's been touch and go so I'm not sure he's going make it yet. So far just frozen bloodworms, won't take the pellets. Just wondering if anyone has any tips for nursing a fish back to health that has gotten skinny due to a disease?.
If he doesn't get better, then I'll keep feeding him and keeping him comfy until he passes away.

Another day of driving to my parents house for "solving mysteries" and troubleshooting. What do I find during my searching?..My own thread. I'm amazed at the lack of information on this topic, I was thinking surely someone has nursed a skinny fish back to health before.

fatten a skinny catfish as long as it is no longer sick is easy...clean warm water and good food with no overtly aggressive tank mates. No real special magic there.

what is wrong with him? A fish that does not eat is a sick fish. What do you thing the problem is? Internal parasites or a bacterial infection? If you are are on the last ropes and are willing to try a hail mary try to treat for both in a QT tank with an antibiotic (kanamyacin, furan-2 or maracyn 2) along with metro and prazi. Not sure what you have tried yet though.

I don't think he's sick anymore, depending on how long these internal infections last. But yes, that's is why he's skinny, stopped eating while sick. No longer is flipping on his back and his barbals recently started growing again slowly. Just a skinny weak fish with a swim bladder that doesn't work as well as it used to I think. Seems to have trouble assuming the normal upside down position, gets around just fine on the bottom. I've been giving him fifty percent water changes every other day and frozen bloodworms.
I'm thinking of housing him with my goldfish later on because I don't think he can compete with the rest of my syno group anymore.

The meds I used were( but not all together, one at a time):
- Fish mox.
- Maracyn plus.
-Penicillin.

I've had to deal with skinny clown loaches in the past. I used Maracyn I in early cases and, later, kanamycin and TMP sulfa combined. I believed it was mycobacteria which can cause, among many other things, wasting.
