stacking filters

This is a naive question for how long I have been in the hobby, but here it is. When people stack canister filters are they connecting the output of one filter to the input of the next canister? If they are the same filter do you have to worry about any issues? Also whats the advantage vs running them separately?

You do not want to connect canister filters like that. They are not designed to work that way. When I've read about stacking filters, it is generally in reference to running multiple filters on one tank.
