I was doing research for sump ideas and come across this website (http://wernersponds.com/biofiltermedia.htm). Going by what the website clams stainless steel scrubbies have a surface area of 420 cu.ft.

I can get 72 stainless steel scrubbies from this website (click here) for $24.99.

Do you guys see any reason why these would not make a killer bio medium?

dont use them. at lot of time those are not really stainless steel and end up rusting. if this happens it will cause a lot of damage to your fish. use nylon scrubbies

I heard they kill bacteria, therefore, not good for a bio medium

agree, just use the nylon scrubbies. just get them at the dollar store.. the shop around here sells a 6 pack for $1.

I'm going to check at Big Lots today.

Do the scrubbies have more bio medium than bio balls? A 5 gallon buck of 1" balls can be purchased for $30.00.

for 30$, you could get like 3 bucket fulls of scrubbies and they have double the surface area (just about) of bio balls. Do the scrubbers.

Anything is self cleaning if the water flow is high enough

Scrubbies are a Great low cost alternative to other media, Dollar for Dollar you can't beat Scrubbies... but personally I prefer Bio Balls... mind you I've had so many of them come in here as part of tanks that I've bought I can't beat the dollar value of free LOL ;)
