Hi all,

Here is my first, rough aquarium stand design. All the members are made out of 2x4s, and it has a 40b on top and a 20L on the bottom (not sure if I trust a larger tank in this apartment...). Most, if not all, of the connections are glued and screwed together.

Yes, I realize it is probably overkill (I built the top and the legs, and boy it is heavy), but I wanted to be safe than sorry. It's only ~52 feet of 2x4's...

Could anyone identify a possible/significant weak point? I would like to catch it before I finish assembling it tomorrow...

Thanks!

Seems ok, Very much overkill, I built a stand for my 55 and am building on for my 84 entirely from plywood. You will be fine as long as you assesemble correctly.

I would have preferred the 'refined' look with plywood, but I was unable to transport it, and there is no space to cut it. My work space is pretty confined:

Think you'll be good, built a very similar stand for a 90 gallon a couple years, still going strong.
Good to hear I still have an additional 50g worth of capacity. ;)

looks like you will need some pretty long wood screws to get thru all them 2x4's.
I've been layering them so a 2.5" screw works. Since the front horizontal piece was doubled up, I wanted to be sure to get a screw that wasn't too long that would pierce the front piece, but only wanted to buy one size of screws... Ends up I need another pound of screws. :irked:

horrible.

40 gallon? 36 X 18? add an inch for both dimensions.

build the top and bottom frame first. you want the frame supporting weight, not the legs. wobble more than my dubstep.

cut list as follows....

2/4

4 @ 37"
4 @ 16"

the longer rails on the frame run full.

then how high do you want it? 30"?

8 @ 30"

put these inside of ur frame running up and down in the corners, basically L shapes on a plan view.

cut another 8 @ 27" to scab into place onto the 30"s between the frame.

that's the best way to go about it. not being mean, but even 40 gallons can sway, especially with those l.a. tremors.
