So in the near future I'll be looking at buying a 6x2x2 tank, but as we all know, commercially-made stands are amazingly expensive and so I'm hoping to save some cash by building it myself. I have some experience building stands already - I built a stand for my 4'x15"x18" tank just over a year ago - but given the massive increase in weight and the much bigger cost in failure, I thought I'd run my design past you guys first. :)

Below is a sketch of the stand I intend to build:

6x2x2-1.png

Each of the six vertical beams are 70mm x 70mm (2.75"x2.75") pine. The four corners of the tank sit on the four outer-most corners of the legs (the points marked in red), meaning ALL of the tank's weight is being transfered straight downwards into the legs.

The rest of the tank is built out of 75mm x 30mm pine. As you can see, this pine only serves to hold the legs in place and upright, and does not actually hold any weight, except for the crossbeams at the top of the stand. The whole thing will be held together by the appropriate screws (haven't given the screws much though yet, just want to make sure the overall construction is solid).

The goal of this build is simplicity; I can just cut everything to length and then screw it all together without having to worry about any fancy joints. Ultimately I will be boxing the whole stand in with ply, but I didn't include that on this drawing so as not to obscure the construction.

Looking at the "Worried your stand won't hold up?" stickied topic, I really think this design should be alright. Just thought I'd check with those more knowledgeable than myself before I go out and buy any wood.

Cheers

It will work, I'd put a board across the back from bottom tip to top tip to eliminate any potential sway.

I have two builds in my signature..each started pretty close to this design. One with brackets, the other with pocket screws. Have fun and post pics!

It will not work!! All the load of the top will be on the screws and they will fail. You need to cut the 4x4's to fit under the 2x4's or put 2x4's in between. Maduro does know what he is talking about, but I think he missed this.

Hello and welcome to MFK!

The above members are correct. You are utilizing very little of the compressive strength of the vertial members.

You are welcome to utilize a drawing based on input from various other MFK DIY projects and input from other members:

Good luck!

as everyone above said, always have vertical supports directly under the horizontal members where the perimeter of the tank will sit. the weight will be distributed through the legs instead of the screws. something like this. i always add the extra joists in the corners to give the legs more rigidity against back and forth, and side to side movement. later i sheath the top w/ 1/2 ply. it may be over done but better safe than sorry. lol. this stand was for a 100g w/ 2x4 legs and 2x2 in the corners. the middle verticals were just because it was turned in to a compartment for the canister filter.
