A little place called C At Hell
Hello,

I'm looking to throw together a stand for a 75g grow out. I believe the tank is 4' long, and my question is if I'll need a brace in the middle of the stand or if four corners will be enough?

Each corner will have 2 2x4s that the tank will sit on, and I'm wondering if the middle will need some extra support also.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Alright, so I went ahead with the middle support.

This is my first stand, and figured I'd go with the safe bet of added support.

Does it look like it'll hold 75g worth of water?

Looks good but you will need some 2x4s to actually hold the weight of the tank right now it's just going to be all the weight on the screws.

Put them were you have the legs now but in between the top and bottom rim. Cut them a little longer then you need so its a tight fit and use a hammer or just tap it in place so its a tight fit.

Thanks!

The 2x4's along the outside are just a lip, the 2x4 (x2) legs are the main support.

I really wanted to have a lip on the top to set the tank inside, but figured it would be better to disperse the load of the tank, so I put the 3 2x4's on the top of the stand to add some more strength.

Oh ok I see what your saying now the tank is going to be inside the lip on the legs. Well you could always make a door and close it off with those oak boards for like flooring

Hello; An addition that may help keep the stand from racking is the addition of some diagionals or perhaps a plywood skin on the back. Either way this should help prevent any tendency for the stand to move sideways.
A check to see that the top is true where the tank will actually touch may be good insurance. Should one part be slightly higher than another it could be a stress point on the tank. I like to place a sheet of plywood under tanks and on top of stands.
Good luck

Thanks for the feedback!

I've filled it up and the stand is holding. I'll see about getting some extra lumber and adding a few supports as suggested!

How much did you spend on the stand I might build one like it for my 75

10 2x4's and 2 50 count boxes of screws was around $40. I could've probably done it with 8 2x4's, and just made the stand shorter. It's currently 3' tall, plus the height of the tank. 2' tall would've been more ideal, but we live and learn.

Yeah I'm making mine around 2' tall so I could probably do it with 8 2x4s
