I just found a tank that is 4x2x2 but doesn't come with a stand. Do you guys think I could build my own or will the tank be too heavy? If anyone has any other ideas for a stand i'd be more than happy to try them.
You could build a stand with ease. If you just want a 2x4 stand, then you could build it for under $30. (depending on price of lumber). If you want a finished stand, you could build one for $100-$150.
They are super easy to build and there are tons of threads detailing how to build one.
I agree with pharaoh, you should build one yourself pb, there's lots of ideas & pic's on MFK that will help you.
I recently got a 6 x 2 x 2 without a stand & im in the process of building one that i saw on a MFK thread, i'll be posting the result soon as it's finished.
Like the guys say, 4x2s and plywood are your friend.
If in doubt, add a few more 4x2s to the design.
The 4x2s hold the vertical weight, and the ply braces the back and sides to prevent them moving and 'wracking' (folding up). Once you have a 4x2s box, clad with plywood you have something thats probably stronger than the house you are putting it in.
Some basic DIY tools are all you need, probably buy the material and tools for the cost of a decent prebuild stand, and make a light hood with the leftovers.
How you finish the outside is up to you, use some nice plywood, some wooden trim and varnish, or just paint the whole thing to suit. Your call.
