Doing water changes
OK I have a Stand that is 72x24 and there is a tank that is 60x18 on it. I found a Deal for a 72x24x24 tank but Im not sure if my stand wil support the tank. On all 4 corners i have 4x4's and then in the middle i have 2 2x4's with 2x4 running across the length of the tank on both sides and cross braced on the bottom with a 1/4 inch plywood on top of the 2x4's. Ill post pics tonight. But i was just curious if anyone might think it will support a 180 gallon tank. I can sit on the stand and have the tank on it filled with water and it doesnt bend or make noise. (i weigh 230 lbs)

If the stand is actually built for an aquarium, they are designed to hold such weight. I have a 150g that after 200lbs of sand and then all of the water and decore, weighs close to 1800lbs. anything else that you add is overkill. My stand is pretty bare in the middle and doesn't have any major supports but in the corners, 2x4s. Most of it is made out of 1 in plywood. the middle supports are also 1in plywood but are about 6in wide. You should have plenty of support if you are using all of that wood!! Make sure you put a thin sheet of Styrofoam down that is the same size as the bottom of your tank. It will help evenly distribute the wieght and help prevent future leeks. Make sure that the seems of the tank look good before you start adding any water. Good luck. How much was the tank?

only a chain saw will break a 4X4 as far as tanks go

yeah now that i think about it i have seen tanks 200+ gallons that only have eight 2x2's supporting all the weight of the tank with a ton of sand in there too. The tank is $130 bare tank. And Im going to make them fill it up before i buy it.

Go look at the store bought stands for the 180. It will surprise you how flimsy they look, but yet they are designed to hold the weight. Im sure your stand made of 4x4's is alot sturdier than those stands.
