The time has come to purchase the pipes to put into my bulkheads. I have 1 inch bulkheads. I was reading somewhere that If I use Durso pipes, I need to use 1.25 inch pipes. I am not going to use the durso standpipe design. I am going to have two pipes with vent caps on top. The first will be adjusted with a ball valve untill it doesn't make any noise. The second is a backup and will be all the way open. Do I need 1.25 inch pipes, or will 1 inch be ok?

the 1.25" pipe would be pretty worthless for you since it wont fit your bulkhead

im not seeing how you will have stand pipes with vent caps on top but not be of the durso design:confused: if the vent is on top there will have to be a side inlet.

the reason a durso needs a 1.25" pipe when using a 1" bulkhead is for noise reduction only. for a normal standpipe 1" will be fine. i gotta say though that durso's work very well and are insanely quiet, no ball valve needed, and no "what ifs" by using ball valves and reducing pipe size at that point.

You are thinking ahead...way ahead :grinyes: The larger pipes won't help but they won't hurt either. The Durso needs the larger pipe for noise control. Your idea won't have the problems that the Durso does. Vent caps won't help either because the technique using the ball valve will be 100% silent. The stand pipe with the valve should be about 1/2" to 1" shorter than the other. Then you adjust the valve until the water surface is just below the taller pipe or just trickling into it. The taller pipe should not have any noise suppression because you want to know if there is ever a problem with the system. If there is a clog in the primary pipe, the gurgling will alert you to it.

I'm going to go with the one inch pipes. They are less obtrusive.

The vent covers are to prevent a fish from getting stuck and clogging the pipe. They are not for noise reduction. In the absence of overflows, I'm not sure how else to keep them out. I lost a fish to my cansiter intake and don't want a repeate. The fish are living things and it upsets me to see them suffer. If there is a better way to keep them out, let me know.

My next issue is going to be finding a pump that will put out just under 600 GPH after head loss. I have found one that will be at about 630. I'm figuring that I will set up a tee off of the return and let some of the water loop back into the fuge. Probobly a question for another thread.
