OK I have a particle board stand made by Hagen. Its the standard stand that they sell for fish tanks. I have the tank it was designed to hold on top of it. On a SW forum these guys are tearing my stand up saying that shouldn't be allowed to be sold and all this. That particle board is so dangerous and all this. Is this really true??? can particle board be just fine???

Particle board is hagen cheap way of getting out of stuff. I think that pople ae affraid that water will get into the wood and expand it making it weak and unsafe for your SW friends. I have an All-Glass solid pine stand with cabinets. Its 48x18. What I did, I put a thick peice of aspenite(5/8) over it and put my 35G tank ontop for some time. Now im not sure if this is recommended but it works.

i got a 150, 100, and a 75 on particle board stands with no probs for years. water is the only thing thats going to really make the stand unsafe, and if you got that much water getting on your stand, your wet socks will let you know b4 its too late.;)

If partical board gets wet enough it will bow and your tank could crack or even worse burst. Most manufacurs only make partical board stands for smaller tanks. i.e. 55 and below. Gotta "love" PetsMart, they sell partical board stands all the way up to the 125 sizes. How big is the tank? It's ok to use it, just be carefull. If it's 20 gallons or below it's more than fine. If bigger I would be worried because things do get wet around tanks. The salt creep also may play a factor in it. I don't know. Salt is verry corrosive. You should be fine as long as it does not get wet. A hard wood stand is much safer and looks better IMO.
