i had an outbreak of hair algae, and the local pet shop couldnt get any e. siamensis.. so at the next big water change, i got a new stanley blade (soaked in boiling water to clean oil/disinfect) and scraped the sides down - to great effect!

but then i found a stubborn bit, so whilst supporting the top of the tank wall with my left hand, i scraped away with my right.. it came away, but such was the force required, the blade continued all the way across the tank front to meet up with my thumb!!

had a quick look, and just looked like a little nick.. so i carried on... then the water started turnng red..

it appears that although small.. the point had gone in deep.. and the blood as coming out quite fast..

first aid training worked well, and after a quick rinse i elevated the limb, kept pressure on and sat down - looking at my 1/4 full red tank...

after half an hour it had started to knit, so i dressed it (with the neighbours help) and carried on..

the lesson i learnt was:

Its bloody difficult to do a water change with only one hand!
