staple foods

i was wondering what do most people feed their fish for staple foods.
i know variation is good but what do u feed your fish mostly. kinda like chinese and rice
i fed all my fish market shrimp when i started keeping fish. then i switched over to smelt. it seems like the fish dont take the smelt that well. anybody have a good expeirence with smelt? maybe used garlic extract or any other tricks.
if i cant find a way to get my fish to eat smelt i might have to go back to shrimp.

I get everything onto pellets, Hirkari Gold, then add variety from there.

Kind of hard to answer for me since I have so many fish.
I picked pellets because it seems like the majority of my fish eat pellets of different kinds, but my dats will only eat krill, my ornates only eat various frozen or live foods, and several of my small fish eat primarily flakes or freeze dried foods.
Even for the fish that eat pellets I like to mix it up between that and live/frozen/free dried foods. I try to feed a pretty good mix of foods to all my fish (other than the dats which won't switch off of a krill ).
