Star Polyp advice please

I just bought the first piece of coral for my reef tank. It was a star polyp, I bought it cause it was a reallly good price. Anyone know how long it take for them to come out and "mount" after you put them into the tank,..And any other usefull advice is welcome.

mine went from a half dollar chunk to a hand size sheet in about 5 months

Mine took about a week to start opening up. I have had it for about 3 months and i divided it last week. I want patches of it every where.I love it, all you have to do to them is enjoy watching them grow. I don't spot feed them. They get plenty from everything else i feed.
