So there was a huge announcement at this years Leadership conference for Starbucks, they are teaming up with the (Red) product line. Bono was there to introduce it, and I have to say it rocks!
In case you don't know what product red is, it's a cause marketing organization meant to provide AIDs/Tuberculosis/Malaria relief in Africa. Many of the product lines (gap's african cotton products produced in Lesotho and Converse's mudcloth shoes just to name) come from African products and are made in Fair Practice factories.
While Product Red catches a lot of flak about them being more about show that giving money, here's a few examples of what they do: 5%-15% of the converse mudcloth shoes is donated, 40% of the Armani (red) watches, All online revenue from The Indepenants online sales, $17 from every (red) RAZR, $5 for every subscription to vanity fair, and the list goes on.
Yes it is a flashy cause, that much of the money goes to overhead. With this overhead and increased publicity, they are still able to donate more than if they received no press and donated 100% of revenue.
What Starbucks plans on doing is this: simply donating .05 from every holiday drink sold to (red). This sounds miniscule, but think of it this way. The USD (units sold a day) goal of Starbuck's stores is 48. Approximately 7,087 company operated stores and over 4,000 licensed concept stores (think of the stores in target, barnes and noble, and other places like that) will be participating. That's a GOAL of 528,000 beverage a day ($26,400) a day. We're looking at $184,000 a week, and almost $1.5 over the course of the holiday period. If you think that is unreasonable, take it from a Starbuck's Partner that 48 of 4 different drinks a day for Starbucks (especially this popular of one) can be done.
So what I say to you, oh 40,000+ philanthropists. Don't feel bad about buy these drinks this holiday, it will be for something good!
