I'm fairly new to fish keeping and just got a pair of Starlight Bristlenose Plecos. They are really lovely fish and are great at keeping the tank algae free, i was just wondering if any one knew how to tell what sex they both are and if its possible to breed them in captivity?

do you have any picture? that particular kind of bristlenose is a bit harder to sex due to the fact that they take a little longer to mature than common bristlenose, albinos and calicos. They are still very easy to breed. I just made a HUGE instruction guide on breeding these in a post not to long ago if you look in this exact section a few days back. Basically to sex, the female will NOT have bristles while the male has bristles on his top lip AND up his face. NOTE: the female of this particular type of bristlenose may get very small bristles on the edge of thei lip unlike most other types. Male however will get longer larger thicker bristles and they will also go up his face and not just on the lip like females. if you have picture i can hlep more, and alos if they are large enough.

one thing i forgot. when breeding, these unlike other bn plecos, like to breed in dark water, there is something called black water from KENT brand that really helps these guys with breeding :)

Thank you, ill try and upload pictures of them both tomorrow. So would you recommend moving them into a smaller separate tank to breed them in black water? also do you need to buy black water like you need to buy RO water for discus or can you treat normally water and turn it?

:grinno: black water isnt an actual bottled water. Its an extract that you put in the regular water. Kent makes the one i usually use and have had success with.

if you can find some, almond leaves usually have the same effect :)
good size tank would be a 20g long. :)
