Weve lost power here and ive lost just about all of my fish.House temperature is 45 degrees and my tanks have already been drained but theres still water in my fluval cannister filters.Power just came back on and my question is can i refill sometime today and turn everything back on or is all me beneficial bacteria dead? Thanks and r.i.p to all my fish friends.

Sorry for your loss. Some of the bacteria surely survived. How long was the power off? You can do a water change adding slightly warmer water to your tank if there are fish still alive to slowly bring it back up to temp. I would re-fill asap and get the canister going. You will need some sort of bio-load to keep the remaining bacteria from starving itself.

Agreed.
What caused the accident?

NO NO NO!!!
Clean everything and start over... setting in stagnant water is bad bad...You are going to be at square one...like New tanks.

If the power was out long enough for you to loose fish, I wouldn't try to use the fouled filter, without a thorough cleaning...

A few hours is iffy without anything any longer and you have toxins building up from things dying off...

Sorry to hear about loosing your finned friends...

We had a bad ice storm that has knocked out power to 205,000 people so far.We lost power at 9:00am yesterday and temp in tank was 72 degrees when i took the fish out.Currently the surving fish{all were alive when i took them out}are in a rubbermaid tote at my in-laws with a bubbler stone and a heater. There doing ok so far.I have the heater set on 81 degrees. If my lfs opens today im going to take them up there and have him hold them till i get ready. When i leave work im going to refill the tank.I guess clean the filters if you all think its not safe, and dump a bunch of Cycle in and when the heat gets right and add the fish if there not open or cant take them.I guess ill moniter water params and keep putting prime in if i get ammonia spikes. What do you all think of this strategy and what would you do better or diffrent.I dont think the remaining fish will last long in that tote so i need to get something done by the evening.Oh and the tank is empty but i left the filters full if this matters.

Sounds good except I'd use Seachems "STABILITY" to reseed the filter...
It works, I've personally used it with no dead loss to a brand new tank and filter. Just follow the instructions...you'll be able to put your fish in right away, and forego the LFS...

if your filters are wet and running then your bb survived. but you need to get the fish back in there today before your bacteria dies off with nothing to feed it. sorry for your loss-that just sucks.

The filters are still full of water but not running.Since thats the case you all think that ill need to dump that water and refill or just fill the tank and turn them on.The water in them has been chilled ofcourse and not running for over 24 hours.I just dont want to put anything toxic in the water or not be able to use anything good thats left either.Ill get some stability by seachem also.Thank you.

24 hours of still water? you think his BB is still alive and not toxic?

I'd start over, use some Bio Spira if you must...I wouldn't risk adding stagnant water like the earlier post mentioned
