Hey; Disclaimer, I'm fish-stupid.

My girlfriend is getting me a 20 gallon tank for Christmas, and I was hoping to make it into a clown tank...
...If things go the way I plan, I was hoping to get 2-3 clowns in the tank, specifically Amphiprion frenatus with A Heteractis malu, but I was wondering if the Amphiprion percula could be compatiblewith the anenome

I have a few questions; Are the Clowns going to have enough room in the 20 gallon? Do I have enough room for the single anemone?

P.S. If there is a bettter combonation, please, don't be shy to recomend one.

Thanks in advance

are you sure it's a malu and not a crispa? the two are commonly miss ID'd

tomato clowns should ideally be in a 50 or so gallon tank, especially as a pair or group

a oair of occelarus, percula, or single (male) clownfish would work in a 20 gallon most likely with a bubble tip (E. quadricolor) would work out best IMO

the nem would need the tank to be rather well established and would be quite a bit harder to care for than the clowns.. i would wait at least 6 mo to get one, the clowns will be fine without it in the mean time

I have a 12 gallon with 2 clowns in it, there just 2 little guys(1", 1.5")they are extremely hardy, well mine are at least.
Don't have an anemone, but will soon with my 90 gallon.

They survived hurricane Ike well.

Great fish for starters imo.

Just so you know; I haven't gotten anything yet, so this is as far as "set-in-stone" as it can get. That being said...

...The nem I was looking at was pale and had bright colored tips, I thought that was the Malu. Is the Malu no good for a tank this size? Would the bub-tip be better? I only picked the Malu because it was attracive :P, but if the bub-tip does the job better, and makes the clowns happier, then bub-tip all the way.

As far as the clowns, I suppose the tomato's are out of the question. The occerlaris and the percula that were recomended (Beutiful fish, by the way); do they go well with the Malu nem? I know they go well with the bub-tip, but I would love to have the Malu in the tank at some point, rolling the picture in my head looks so great.

when I googled Mali nems I saw pics of them with percé so I guess the work

BTAs are IMO the harriers and most attractive, so I suggested them

A 20 gallon should be since all you want is the clowns and nem

Anemones need intense lighting and pristine water quality. If you really want one, make sure youre prepared. Think lots of live rock and a skimmer for filtration, and metal halide or High Output T5 for lighting...

what exactly do you mean by a single male clownfish?

Isn't it a bit too late to have a tank ready by christmas? I mean it wont be property cycled (sorry salt tank's are not my thing).

pretty much, i got a tank for christmas as an "early" gift, i mean were are you going to hide a glass box capable of holding 90 gallons of water?

but ya, to have a fully set up and running tank for christmas, with fish, corals, inverts, you would have to start around... september, october, possibly later depending on the size and what you want.

Sorry for the confusion. I don't need to have the tank up by Christmas, my girlfriend is just getting my the tank as a gift, I'm just kinda planning ahead because I'm so freakin' excited.

Thanks for all the responses guys. :P

Solitary clowns will remain male and thus smaller
