Well, I registered earlier this week and just now got prompted to make my first post! So here goes. . .

After 20 years being away from the hobby (I ran small tanks here and there) I'm back in a big way, preparing to set up a 200g with a 72" by 36" footprint (unusual, I know - - an acrylic tank built for coral). I'm going with fresh water and over time hope to acquire some of the species discussed here - - clown knives, datnoids, CA/SA cichlids etc.

I've been studying up on this cycling business, and would love some mentoring on the fishless/with fish options. For those favoring cycling with fish in the tank, how much livestock would I need to cycle a tank this size? Anybody have some "tricks" they'd like to share?

Thanks for any advice. Once my custom stand arrives it's blast-off!

welcome!!
depending on what part of IL you are in, I may be able to hook you up with a nice clown knife when you get that beast running:)

Thanks for the warm welcome. I look forward to mining the intellectual capital residing on this site in the future.

Thanks for the link, Zennzzo. I seem to recall that if I place some media from an established tank (I've got a 30g running) into the new set-up that it will help grease the skids. Correct?

Rallysman, I'm 30 miles W of Chicago. I'm still trying to figure how I'll populate the new tank. I've got a nice severum (maybe 7"), tinfoil barb (6"), and a leporinus (6") in my 30g, and their chorus is "Upgrade us, quickly!" This will do it, but I need to be careful how I bring in new members. Advice there is much appreciated. I had a beautiful Clown 20 years ago and am dead set on having another. Whether that entails growing one out (I hear they're slow) or bringing in a trophy is yet to be determined.

I'm loving this already. I'm certain future dialogue will make my life easier.
