I just got a 5 gallon tank that I am cycling right now. The tank is bare because I would like some info on how to set it up. I have a 12'' florida gar that I would like to breed fish for. I have never bred fish so I would like to start w/ something pretty simple.

How can I set up the tank for swordtails....guppies are too small. Everything head to toe...substrate, plants, rocks, temp etc...thanks guys and girls.

Temp 70F I would go with sand/Fine gravel some flotting plastic plants. Feed Flakes and 3x a day. But a 5G is kinda small for them and u can only fit 1M & 2F in that size so expect something like 1 babie a week then about 1month for it to get big enough

For 5g....hmm..Shellies are good choices; however, you will soon need another tank for the offsprings. Killie fish is also a great choice. If you get the annual type, then you will not have to worry about the off springs for about half a year. You can set up the tank with peat moss on the bottom as it is easier to collect the eggs. Oh shoot..I forgot you mentioned something simple, the endlers livebearers are quite small and color full.. They are easy to breed to. You can set up the tank whatever way you like.

Thanks guys....I but black gravel and some plants in so far...the green w/ the black bottom looks way cool. As of now I am just using it as a holding tank for feeders. I think eventually..one of these days i'll get a 10 or 20 gallon and use this 5 gallon as a holding tank to raise fry. It may be a bit cause it's hard to add tanks w/ my girl....gotta put in some work till I get another. Cause the addiction does nothing but continue to grow.
