So today i went to a specialty fish store in my area, where they have exotic and cool fish not found in pet stores like petsmart.. ext...ext. Iv'e decided to get some severums because they are very colorful and get to be a pretty decent size which is what im after! I want the size without making the fish uncomferrable due to the tank size.

What would be a good setup for these fish, PH, TEMP, rocks, plants, driftwood, things like this. I have already put down a nice sand bottom that i have used in my other two tanks. Im leaning towards the driftwood look but am wondering what the fish would like best. Please let me know your opinions and such, thanks guys!
Here's a pic of my tanks:

I love Severums! They are one of my favorite Cichlids. You are right on target with the driftwood design. You could add some large stones or petrified wood for more hiding spots if you want. You could try live plants, however mine like to nibble at plants and so I have opted for plastic plants. As for water parameters: PH- 7.0, Temp - 78 - 80 degrees.

As I am sure you have seen, Severums come in varying varieties (Green, Gold, Red Spot, Rokteil). Good Luck with whatever you choose!

Here is a picture of my Red Spot Gold Severum:

I had a single green severum in a 55g community with cory's and tetras a long time ago and he was a great fish. I'm holding out for a rotkiel and want to add one to my current 75g community tank that I'm saving room for.

I have very hard alkaline water that I kept at 76 and all was well for years. I used plastic plants and driftwood. I understand they like to mess with live plants so I never tried them. Use your local water and don't mess with trying to get it soft and you'll be happy. On occasion I fed mine small earth worms and bugs of all kinds, fun.

I would not want more than one in a 55g but thats just my opinion. Nice tanks you have there and I'd like to pull up a chair right in front of the hex tank and have my field of view filled with fish! Good luck with your severums, you'll enjoy their personality.

I would not put more than 2 in your 55, they grow 8", they need a lot room. Severums are my favorite fish also. Good Luck

If you put more than 2 there is a high chance of aggression. Ime severums do best in 2's or in large groups, and you are limited by tank size. If it was me i'd do a super red and a rotkiel with larger tetras or barbs. With some corys or other small bottom dwellers with driftwood and some large fake plants.

i was thinking 2 of the severums and a pleco. Not sure what kind i would want (probably sailfin) but i was talking with the guy at the fish store he said that would work. I'll have to ask about some other smaller fish to give the tank some filler but i def plan on getting same fake bigger plants and thank you for the advice mate, appreciate it!

The sailfin will quickly outgrow a 55. If I was you I would do one of the medium sized fancy pleco's.

yeah i agree they get rather large haha :P i will have to see what they have available. Do you know any that get like 10" size and stay around that because i know my sailfin in my other tank will get to 24" eventually.
