Hi all

Recently I'm amazed with such gorgeous discus around. Very beuty planted tanks with them, and some really nice discus in bare bottom too.

I was planning to make it some day, but, I won a nice small discus from my girlfriend (its still in the LFS) and now have to rush some home to him.

BUT (there's always a but), the tank I plan to use have a 10" silver aro and an old BP, and a small CKF (no more than 4" and a half).

Would it be ok to raise a couple of discus with them in a bare bottom tank ??
The tank in question have 30 in x 15in x 17.7 in about 35.35 gal. (77cm x 39cm x 45cm - about 135 liters).

Help me out here friends, I really like that pigeon blood. Not mention its a special from my girlfriend.

depending on size of discus I would say that the tank would be a bit small as you must keep in mind that discus need to be with several others unless it is an adult. Smaller 1"-4" they should be kept with a minimum of 4 discus.
Don't be in such a rush to bring him home does not sound like you have the room with the aro.
Realistically, unless the discus are used to the aro it may stress them out. The BP and CKF would be no good to keep in the tank as well.

I have 7 discus with 3 plecos 1 cory and an aro and since the aro has pretty much grown with several of my small discus they are not stressed by it. The larger ones don't freak out since they are larger than he is for the meanwhile, but he is constantly growing.

IMO, that tank is too small. discus are a shoaling fish and need to be kept in numbers. even if young, they need the top quality conditions generally provided with a decent water volume. most people use 60-100G tanks for growing on young fish. its definately too small for adults IMO.

i dnt think its a good idea becase the silver aro would probly kill it thats wat i think any ways

Don't do it, not a big enough tank, and not very good tankmates.............

Can be done I've seen it on here somewhere but digthemlows is right, no where near a big enough tank to to try it.

Discus need to be kept in numbers, if you want to get them I advise a 55g minimum with 5 or so fish and be prepared to keep up the water changes if you get them small and need to grow them out

damn
I'm holding myself to don't bring them home.
tks anyway guys, helped me a lot

hi there. go to simplydiscus.com for more information.
to address your specific point - those tank mates in the set up you have are definitely not suitable for discus. discus also do better with other discus as company. you should aim to get fish around the same size.
since you are in brasil is there no way to get wild fish? ;) those are very cool in my opinion. all the best.

yes, there is a way to get some wild discus here. the price is a bit higher, not so much like red malrboro, but suitable.
the other fishes are all "babies", if i can say that.
the aro has 9"
the clown knife 4"
the bp is the oldest, but no more than 7" to 8".
and the discus I was gifted, has about 4".
But, I'm not planing to leave him alone, but to buy another one or two, maybe three.
House them here until make a bigger tank, move the aro other tank (with some pimas, rtc and tsn).
