With the dimensions you give, that makes your tank a 32 gallon. It would be a nice size for a pair of firemouth cichlids and some smaller quick moving fish such as a school of 5-6 giant danios or some rainbows.
If your tank is actually 36 X 19 X19 inches it is about 52 actual gallons based on inside dimensions. 56 gal based on the gross outside dimensions. Not a typical sized tank.
Your surface area is ~648 sq inches
A standard 55 gal only has ~564 sq in of surface area.
So if the info above is correct you can keep six discus comfortably. I just wonder about the dimensions you have given. Most 50 gallon tanks made are 36X16X20 inches. Some are 36X18X18 inches. Six discus can be kept in a 50 gallon tank with good filtration and water changes.
Surface area is the most important factor when determining discus stocking levels.
Discus should have at least water 16 or more inches tall. They enjoy but do not require more than 16 inch deep water. I keep mated pairs in standard 20H's which are 24X12X16H inches and standard 29H's which are 30X12X18H inches.
