My 55 is almost completely cycled - I'm going to pick up some substrate tomorrow and I've finaly decided on Lake Malawi mbunas. I know there are tons and tons of species, but I'd like some opinions from mbuna owners on what species are their favorites. I'm looking for color first, and then personality second. I'm going to start out (slowing stocking of course) with pairs of three species and go from there. So... what are the favorites?

Electric yellows are nice. They add a lot of color from both the male and female and are relatively peaceful. A school of these fish is striking. Demasoni are also colorful(blue with black) and because they stay small are also fairly peaceful. Demasoni, like a majority of Malawi mbuna, do better with one male and a group of females. Any of the copadichromis species are also good, with a wide variety of colors to pick from. I like the borleyi which is purple with yellow tail and fins. Be careful mixing these fish. Some of the most colorful, like the zebras, kenyii, and melanochromis are also the most agressive.

I like the demasoni and the yellow labs - the LFS has a great selection. What price should I be looking for on some of these fish?

I like Cynotilapia afra "cobue" very cool looking fish. Cause of the stripes though, and a more laid back personality of an mbuna, not a good mix with a demasoni. My male got killed by my male demasoni.
