i want to start a salt water fish tank and i dont kno wut fish i can put together and right now i hav a 20 gallon standard tank, and im thinking of buying a 24 gallon on that looks lik the new cube nano tank. it has all the filtration built in including the protein skimmer, etc... so wut would i be better off doing kepping the tank i hav now (no filter) of get the tank i saw at the store with the built in filtration?

Well, it all depends on what you want to spend. The Nano cube is a beautiful system, in looks and all round effectiveness, but keep in mind, it is sold at about 250 dollars. The traditional system is a good, much cheap thing, thats often very effective, but it definitely has its flaws. I'd recomend the tank for now. Buy a good filter, a heater and protein skimmer. get down the basics before going for the bigs stuff :) In my opinion its best to get a bicycle before a motorcycle. ;) On the topic of what to put in, I'd recomend some damsels first, and as you get better, a long nosed hawk fish. Make sure they have plenty of reef like rock so they feel at home, or if your feeling adventerous, why not try some real corals? Beginner corals, not too expensive, just incase it doesnt work out. Also throw in some little hermits and snails, to take care of some of the extra detritus. Good luck,

I have been researching nano tanks as of late and a lot of people are liking the Nano Cube, but there is a high rate of cracking. I would suggest against the Nano Cube as of now until the issue is resolved.

A little more expensive, but very good and highly customizable alternative is the AquaPod.

If you want to use your 20gal, read some of these articles. There is a lot of good info.

Good Luck.

we sell probobly 2-3 nano cubes a week at the LFS i work in and i have never once heard of them cracking. there is also a company that just came out with a thing called an Aqua Pod which is a bit bulkier than the cube but is just as effective and has superior lighting. other than keeping up to date on weekly water changes i would recomend a nano cube. you cant keep "monsters" in there but done right they can make for a really sweet reef tank.
