Okay so we all know I have my 125 but I just put the finishing touches on my 45 breeder. I have a sponge filter soaking up bacteria in my 125 and I'm taking one of my emperor 400s off and using that bacteria in my new tank as well as at least 15 gallons of the water from my 125. How long should I let that water circulate in the 45 before adding fish?

Im not sure if there is a rule when doing it that way but I always wait 2 weeks. That seems to work fine.

With my tank I was using two of the same filters. Moved the full water volume from large tank to small and just took a filter off other tank and moved it to new tank. Instantly up and running. Everyone has own preferences of Course. I gave it two hour to mix the water and warm fully which was not really needed just wanted to make sure heater was all good and moved fish. Simple easy. I went from a 125 to setting up another 55. I moved peacock bass and other stuff No problems at all.

IMO, the best way to establish a new tank is by using some of your old media. But I don't really see the point of using old water. I don't think the water would hold any beneficial bacteria and it just adds nitrates in your new tank. You can use 100% new water as long as the water temperature is acceptable and you use a water conditioner to take out the chlorine from your tap. But maybe that's just me.

As long as your Emperor 400 is fully established, I think you should be able to put a fish already. Just make sure you have a liquid test kit on hand and monitor your water as closely as possible so you will know if you suddenly have any ammonia/nitrite spikes. If you run your tank too long without any fish, your bacteria might go dormant or die without any food source. At least, that's what I've always been told.

Just my two cents. :) Good luck!

Using old water is not necessary unless you are transferring fry; with using old filters, I typically circulate water(with a pump), get the water to the desired temp, dump the fish in at the same time as transferring the already seeded filters.

Circulating mature filters in a new tank for 2 weeks without fish would undo the bacteria.

Thanks guys. Looks like the sponge and emperor are gonna stay wet in a 5 gallon bucket then fill'er up. Put in some stress coat. And start warming. The. Go back and get my wolves. They are hearty monsters anyways :). Growing like weeds too
