not really any african cichlids i can think of that could live their whole life in a 10 gal. but i'm new to africans.

well african cihlids is pretty general you can keep shell dwellers in a ten gallon comftorably.

whats wrong with goldfish

lol no africans dont go in 10 gallon tanks. "Africans" is such a broad term. do you mean lake malawi (mbuna), haps, lake tanganyika or victorian? shellies might do as a pair in a 10 gallon-but i even doubt that. i dont keep lake tangs so im not sure.

how about a 35 gallon tank to start with? go with shellies or a small group of dwarf malawi species fish...

can you get a bigger tank? or are you stuck with a 10 gallon? what species of africans catch your eye?

Keep in mind that even some shellies can be VERY territorial and aggressive towards each other.

troll craigslist and you can find amazing deals on 55 gallon tanks. a 55 gallon is a great starter to keeping the colorful mbunas and other nice rift lake cichlids
