Ok I have a 47/48 gallon column tank with a few fishes that need to go to a new home.. I think I will convert it to a Wet/Dry.

That is the general idea. I was thinking grabbing a new submersible pump online and toss it on the bottom, then make a sort of ring of PVC around it and make it go up all 4 corners and completely around, and have it support a piege of egg grate in 2 places. Directly above the pump and several inches above that.. The gap between I was thinking of filling with ceramic balls probably 2 gallons worth. And pretty much to the top standard bio balls with the typical drip plate and padding on top.

I was just wondering if this is too tall of a design to do this with more or less.. And how many GPH I should probably aim for. My tank is a 150 and I planned to add in a FX5 or 2 in the future. Right now I have a typical cheapo 3 drawer system and it is performing well nitrates dont budge at all with lots of lava rock but I plan to add a ton more fish on top of the 30 or so I have in there.. probably double so I am pre-planning. The ceramic balls by far have more surface area than bio balls or lava rock but in terms of cost effectiveness they are exceedingly more costly. I havnt decided yet to switch it to discus or add more africans but at the moment adding filtration capacity is my first step.
