I have made the step into pikes. I have started small with what was sold as c. Regani. I am not sure whether it is actually c. Notophthalmus. I have read that if the spot on the dorsal is surounded by a white circle it is Regani and if orange or red it is Notophthalmus. mine has the red colouring. Does anyone know any other methods for determining the species.

I need some peanut help.

Thanks

You mentioned the only way I know to tell the two apart, and that is the dorsal occeli. What you stated is correct.

Althought some regani can have some pretty orange fins that make the occeli appear orange as well.

Thanks

It is definatly an orange ring around a single black occeli, I had also read that normally Regani have multiple occeli as well.

Its all good as was after Notophthalmus rather than Regani anyway. I plan to have a go at breeding these guys.

Regani can sport 1 to many spots. I believe the same goes for Notophthalmus(I think they can have 1-2, not too sure though). You will see if you spawn these guys, some will have 1 spot and others will have 2. Regani can have a bunch of occeli it seems.

I am in the middle of getting some C. ragani right now for a little breeding project. The only bad part is that the shipment was due in today, and we have a foot or more of snow and some nasty temps:eek: . I hope they make it or they didn't ship out.

I'm not much of a breeder myself, but I'd figure I would try with something small. And yes, r/o it is. I am thinking about just putting an r/o drip in the tank(10gal per day or so).
