i am in the process of setting up my first small reef . gona take it slow but i was told i should run my tank for a week before i add live rock .
just wondering way this is . because there is nothing to produce waste so what does this do.

also should i leave my light off . during this week .will it promote algea growth ?
its a interpet 36 watt half and half bulb over a 7.5 gal tank
thanks

Throw a cocktail shrimp into the tank. Let it provide you with the bio-logical activity you need to start your cycle. I don't know if you're using all live rock or a mix of live rock and base rock but, that's one of many tried and true ways to start a cycle. If you are using all uncurred live rock you can forget the shrimp you won't need it or probably not anyway. If you are just running the tank with out any amonia source you're just wasting your time.
There is no point in running the tank empty anyway other than to check for leaks.
I'd place my live rock then put in your sand . Mix up your sw and fill the tank. Again it depends on what you are planning on.
