this is going to be my first time having discus, but i think im up for the challenge...currently i have a 30g community tank, and a 55g mixed african cichlid with a few peacocks....im looking to start up a new 55g set up maybe having discus..should i use a bare tank with few fake plants? or just a bare tank? are discus better off with little light or a bright light? what kinda species of discus u guys recommend? or any options? one more question, am i better off purchasing them online or from a lfs? sorry for all the questions but i just want to have a healthy, and perfect home for these little guys.

i would go with bare bottom if theyre juvie (easier to clean) they like dim likes but the farm bred can adapt to bright lights. from my experience its better to buy from a local breeder that to buy from a lfs. but if you have no breeder in the area like i dont try online. i was introduce to a guy last week and i have to say he is AMAZING! from what i hear about he is the one for discus need. personally my first order from him will arrive on thursday so i cant speak from experience on his fish yet but from what i herd they top of the line discus healthy as can be. my experience from him so far is that he is a great man to talk or get help from he always tries his best to make sure youre as happy as can be.

also from what i herd never buy discus from lfs most of the time u get runts. thats what happened when i had my lfs order me some. $300 and i got a bunch of stunted fish.

feel free to message me if you have question

5 or 6 can be ok for a 55 gal. do you already have the tank? a 75 does'nt take up much more room and is'nt really that much more expensive. if your getting juvies, which I would advise against, it's best to go bb as they need prestine water and you will be feeding them 6 or 7 times per day. it's a bit more expensive, but the best way would to get 3-4" fish. much easier to care for and you can decorate the tank. whichever, a lfs is the last place I would buy discus from. they usually get culls that breeders don't want. nothing wrong with buying online with next day shipping. as arowanas lover said, simplydiscus has sponsors who will send you quality fish. good luck.
